EDUCATE Denver Statement on DPS Board of Education Vote to Censure Vice President Monica Hunter over Alleged Antisemitism
On Thursday, October 8th, the Denver Public Schools Board of Education voted 4-2 to censure DCTA-backed Board Vice President Monica Hunter following alleged antisemitic statements toward Amy Klein Molk, a fellow board member who identifies as Jewish. In response, EDUCATE Denver issued the following statement:
“EDUCATE Denver expects all adults who work in service to DPS students to model inclusivity and tolerance, unfailingly. This is how we signal to children the justice of equality and the significance of respecting difference. We decry that it took leadership so long to address allegations of antisemitism, applaud the eventual vote to investigate, and respect the new public commitment to accountability, trust-building, and stronger character by the president, vice president, and some sitting board members.
In line with that commitment, the board took action that went halfway, censuring Vice President Hunter as an expression of accountability for her questionable professional decorum. Unfortunately, the Denver community is left contemplating yet another breach of trust by DPS leadership with no consequence. How will President Gaytan be held accountable for her decision to withhold information related to the allegations? EDUCATE Denver calls on the Board to go all the way – take further action on the stated commitment to owning mistakes. We join the Denver community in our desire for an immediate vote for new leadership, in all Board positions – a reorganization directed by the board members themselves. Let’s give someone else a shot at prioritizing student success in Denver Public Schools.”
