EDUCATE Denver Response to School Closure Vote by the Denver Public Schools Board of Education
Denver – EDUCATE Denver, a coalition of civic leaders who support DPS students, states its support for the Board of Education’s unanimous decision yesterday to close or restructure ten elementary and secondary schools in the district. In the context of persistent declining enrollment, the Board’s decision reflects good governance and responsible stewardship of district resources. Importantly, their decision also moves students toward programs that are well-resourced and characterized by higher academic quality.
“EDUCATE Denver appreciates the emotion and difficulty that surround school closure and we extend our support and compassion to affected families,” said Rosemary Rodriguez, EDUCATE Denver chair. “Our support for the decision reflects our belief that students will benefit from the enhanced staffing, enrichment, and programs that are typical in schools that are better resourced.”
In addition to support for the decision, EDUCATE Denver asserts its expectation that DPS will work as an empathetic partner with parents, including them in the creation of programs that meet the unique learning needs of each student impacted by the closures.
